Rulebook
updated 4/2/17 9am

At the Telluride USA National Synchro Championships 2017
there was some discussion and implementation to clarify scoring
6 vs 8 person teams.
We plan on discussing these with the AWSC judges and teams
before implementing them for the AWSC competition.

Changes highlighted in Blue.
Update is with regards to Rules on use of alternates.
If an alternate is used in either the race or bumps,
they must compete in at least one other discipline of the Event.
ie. Race and Synchro, Bumps and Synchro, or Race and Bumps

There were some significant changes to the format of the
competition and the scoring format for 2014.
Racing & bumps were added to the event
as well as a New School Figure.
This 2014 school figure was modified for 2015.

The Rulebook was not completely updated in 2014,
but rather there was an additions section added in this link as well
as the explanations written below.

Race
Race Rules
Aspen World Synchro Championships 2014 race will be held on the Aspen Nastar course.
(Silver Dip Swing trail)
Synchro Team uniform pants must be worn.
You may remove your Synchro team jacket.
No Speed suits or taping of pants or top.
Racers can use any skis. They don't have to be the same skis used in the synchro comp.
All racers must wear helmets and goggles.

Race Format
Teams may load gondola at the public loading 9am time.
No local teams may load early. Sometimes they allow public on a bit before 9.
Course inspection is open from 9am and closes at 9:30am
Race start time for run one is 9:45am.
There will be 4 different racers for each team.
Each racer will run each course once. One run on Yellow, one on Green.

The accumulative time of all 8 runs will make up the team's score.
In the event of a DSQ or DNF, a 32 second time will be the default for that run.
A time will be counted when a racer passes each gate properly with at least 3 pieces of
equipment. ie. two skis, one pole or two poles, one ski.

In the event that a team member on the start list is injured or not present, another team member
may race in their place provided they sign the waiver form. Each team racer may only ski one
run on each course. Only 4 different team members may ski the race.

There is a random draw for the start order. Each racer will be given a bib start number at
registration. All racers MUST sign the separate race waiver form at team registration to be
permitted to race.
Start order for second run will be 16 through 1, then 32 through 17.
We are planning on sending slippers after each 8 runs.
Start time of 2nd run is immediately following the first. Racers must come straight back to
course start.

If a racer misses their start order, they will be sent at the end of that current run, first or second.

Reruns will be determined by the judges if there is course interference or failed timing, etc.

Race Scoring
Racing will make up 20% of the overall score for the overall ranking.
The fastest team time will be awarded 200 points. All the other times will be calculated as raw
times relative to the first place finish score rather than a point system as in the FIS rules.

Bumps
Bump Rules
Bump competition will take place on Sunset/Sunrise (as first choice), the skier's left run.
Subject to change dependent on snow and weather conditions.
Synchro Team uniform must be worn. Bump competitors can use any skis.
They don't have to be the same skis used in the synchro comp.
All bump competitors must wear helmets.

Bump Format
The run will have a rope line down the center to separate 2 lanes. (conditions permitting)
Two competitors will run each side of the course, Skier's left and skier's right at the same time.

Bump scoring
Below is a condensed version of existing bump rules.
For a complete version see the attached file
http://aspenteamdiva.com/rulebooknew.html
newFreestyleSkiingJudgingandScoringHandbook2014v1.1English
Pages 17-21 are the most relevant describing the turns.

There will be 2 judges per competitor, 4 total scoring on the following criteria.
2 Judges on skier's left course and 2 judges on skier's right course.

Since Bump skiing in regular bump competition is quite distinct from the PSIA model, there
will be a bias towards rewarding the PSIA model turns.

5 Criteria for judging would be
• Aggression / Control
Aggressiveness is skiing to one’s personal limits, but not beyond, and in control either on snow
or in the air.

• Fall Line
Competitors should aim to stay in the same mogul line from top to bottom, and not change lines.
Judges will reduce your turn scores by .5 every time you change lines.

• Carving
All turns should be initiated by carving. Efficient use of edging to control speed in and out of
the turn throughout the run. (tip follows tail)

• Absorption/Extension
The faster the skiing, the more absorption required. Movement of the upper body should be kept
minimal. Legs should be used as shock absorbers in anticipation of the moguls. Looking for
ability to jump from bump to bump on occasion to showcase skills.

• Upper Body
Upper body should quiet and controlled and should stay square to the fall line. Arms should
stay in front of the body in a natural position. Discipline between upper and lower body should
be shown.

Synchro

Synchro Rules
See Rulebook 2012
http://aspenteamdiva.com/files/Rulebook_2012.doc
The only change from the existing rules is the New Compulsory Figure.
http://aspenteamdiva.com/files/new_school_figure_updated_Final_Version-shorter_3-11-14.xls

The Final version has been posted on the website since 3/11/14.
http://aspenteamdiva.com/school_figure_new.html
It doesn't differ greatly from the original version posted back in October

Important note for Clarity: This is a compulsory figure. It must be skied as written.
For each deviation from the drawing there will be mandatory deductions. We have
acknowledged there are design problems with this figure. These design problems make it
challenging to ski it cleanly and aggressively and come into the short in sync vertical lines
following the boot touch on turns 1, 3, 5, 7 respectively.
With that said, for teams who have modified the turn count of the figure will receive deductions
for each skier who comes in on a different turn count.
Likewise, the judges will be looking for 2 distinct pops of the two vertical in sync lines
towards center of the run to line up for a zipper close stopping on turn 10. Deviations from this
format will also result in deductions.

Synchro Scoring
Synchro Competition will make up 70% of the overall score for the overall ranking.
The highest team score will be awarded 700 points. All the other scores will be calculated as
raw score relative to the first place finish score rather than a point system as in the FIS rules.

Summary of Changes for 2012

NOT Current 2014
THE RAW SCORE RESULTS WILL BE USED RATHER THAN POINTS BASED ON RANKING AS IN THE PAST.
THIS WILL HELP PREVENT TIES.

OLD POINT SYSTEM NOT TO BE USED 2012:
1ST PLACE - 100 POINTS
2ND        95
3RD        90
4TH        85
5TH        80
etc.

Scoring Summary

* SCORING USES A SCALE FROM 1 TO 5 WITH 0.25 USED EXCEPT FOR THE 5 SCORE.
* ALL SCORE ARE KEPT.
* FOUR SCORES EQUALLY VALUED AT 25% OF THE TOTAL SCORE ARE ADDED TOGETHER:
SYNCHRONICITY, TECHNICAL SKIING, OVERALL APPEARANCE AND DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
* PENALTIES AND MANDATORY DEDUCTIONS FOR FALLS ETC. ARE SUBTRACTED AFTER
THE TOTAL SCORE IS COMPUTED.
* THE SCORE OF POSSIBLE 20 WILL BE MULTIPLIED BY 5 TO GIVE A POSSIBLE SCORE OF 100.

JUDGES 1 THROUGH 5
1             2                3               4                            5
Sync + Tech Ski +Over App + Difficulty= subtotal – Deduc  = score x 5 =100
5.00       5.00           5.00            5.00         20.00  –  Deduc = score x 5 =100
25%        25%         25%            25%    =   100%

CRITERIA FOR SYNCHRONICITY, TECHNICAL SKIING, OVERALL APPEARANCE AND DEGREE OF
DIFFICULTY REMAIN THE SAME.

DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY

TEAMS ARE REQUIRED TO TURN IN THEIR PASS DIAGRAMS AT THEIR REGISTRATION DATE.
DIAGRAMS SUBMITTED AFTER THE 12TH AT 10AM WILL RECEIVE A DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
SCORE OF 3.

PLEASE BRIEFLY EXPLAIN THE CHANGES AND YOUR EXPECTED SCORE FOR DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY
SO THE JUDGES CAN CONFIRM. TEAMS WILL BE EXPECTED TO SKI THE PASS AS SUBMITTED TO
RETAIN THIS SCORE.

Hello AWSC judges,

I am attaching a draft of an updated rulebook for 2015.
There are no real changes from what was done in 2014 other than the correction of the choreography of the New
School Figure for 2015.

The main purpose of this update is to make the rulebook into one single document of an outdated Rulebook 2012.
If you remember last year with the addition of the racing and bumps, we handed out separate sheets with criteria for
these new events. Also a few years ago, Rick updated the Degree of Difficulty Score and these additions never made it
into one single document of an updated Rulebook since 2012.

Please review this draft and let me know if I have made any errors on these edits and I will publish it on the website.

Notable changes since 2012 rulebook
-new school figure (Rick, can you please help us determine the technical difficulty score of this figure with the 2015
changes?)  This section is highlighted since it needs to be updated. page 4,5
Further Figure description on page 14
http://aspenteamdiva.com/school_figure_new.html

- page 7 mentions that the overall appearance score will be deducted 3 points if the compulsory school figure is not
skied as drawn. It was incorrectly written that each judge would deduct 3 points. This goes back to when each judge
scored each category rather than the present system of judges only giving a score for their category) It's highlighted

- racing, page 11 The only additions here are that the random draw will make sure that 2 racers from each team will be
in the first half and the other 2 in the second half. The random draw last year was completely random and as a result
saw some teams with all their racers in the second half for a start number. This will be much fairer.

- bumps page 12, I wrote that the venue will be Blondies which is where we ended up having it last year based on
conditions. Due to the narrowness of the trail we ran one bumper at a time. I wrote that if the bump run is moved to a
wider run, then the skiers will be separated by a center rope and ski at the same time. I thought Blondies' provided a
perfect venue for the easy to close off nature and easy spectator access without clogging up the base of the Ajax
express lift. This was a very legitimate concern of mtn manager Peter King and Patrol with the Sunset Sunrise venue. It
was also highly visible from the lift . Thoughts???

Whether 2 bumpers go at one time or individually, each run will be scored by two judges. There will be 4 judges total
for the bumps.

- Bump criteria is summarized on the this page and is taken from the document
http://
aspenteamdiva.com/files/newFreestyleSkiingJudgingandScoringHandbook2014v1.1English.pdf
where pages 17-21 were most relevant for talking about turn shape and criteria for scoring.

- There is not room at this date to change the degree of difficulty scoring criteria other than what has been determined
as of last year. This is because of the interest of fairness since the teams have designed their figures based on this
criteria. If you see changes you would like to make here, please submit them before Nov 2015.

Thanks for your feedback. I would like to have this document finalized before the 25th so I can share it on the website
to the teams.

Cheers, Kelly
